The lymphatic system – things you should know.

If there is such a thing as a secret hero in our body, it is the lymphatic system. Learn all about the function and structure of this fascinating network.

Keeping our body going

Arteries and veins are not the only traffic routes in our body. The lymphatic system, a kind of hidden transport network, is an important player in our metabolism and immune defence. It is the express courier for immune cells and antibodies that need to get to sites of infection. But the lymphatic system has another important task: It helps transport metabolic products in conjunction with our blood system.

Unlike arteries and veins, the lymphatic system is not a closed network. It begins at the edge of our body with small, blind-ended lymphatic capillaries that connect to form ever larger pathways towards the centre of the body. Embedded in this network are lymph nodes. These small immune-defence sentinels filter pathogens from the lymphatic fluid. Over time, the larger lymphatic vessels, which are similar in structure to blood vessels, merge until they finally end up in the superior vena cava in the venous angle where they connect to the venous system.

Positive effects of lymphatic drainage:
  • Boosting of the lymphatic system
  • Removal of deposits
  • Circumference reduction

The way the lymph flows: The role of the muscular pump

The “muscular pump” plays a special role in the transportation of lymph. When we move, our muscles rhythmically exert pressure on the lymphatic vessels. In this way, the lymphatic fluid is virtually “pumped” through our body and excess tissue fluid drained away.
